Frame by frame animation on a footage for a vibrant moment of the italian basket.

Infront Italy offer me to rotoscope and animate this emotional moment of the final match of italian basket championship 2005.

This spicie cut is part of an documentary to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the victory of Fortitudo Bologna volley team.

A lot of work with a technique that I don't use often, but it's really exciting to apply! =D

The brief

Infront Italy asked me to stylize and re-animate the moment of the last shot in the final match of the 2005 Italian Basketball Championship, when the instant replay was used for the first time in Italy.

Considering the time and the budget available, the only option for me was to rotoscope at 8 frames per second 2 cuts from the broadcast videos of the event.

So I started to draw some style frames...

Tools and processes

I drawn in Adobe Animate CC the characters, keeping separated in different layers the artlines, the bodies fills, the dress fills.

So I had to fix the best palette in Adobe After Effects meanwhile I composited the scene.

I added a lot of texture layers and vfx in AE to give more handcrafted vibes to the pic.

One of the few requests made by the client was to touch up the skin color of the Caucasian players: the fuchsia was too strong!

Tools and techniques

I mixed a lot of tools:
Photoshop and Illustrator with a Wacom One tablet, to design and illustrate.

After Effects and Limber plugin for the character animation and compositing.

Animate CC for frame by frame vfx and the "run" cut.

Cinema 4D to model and move the 3D backgrounds.
